日本人が慣れ親しんでいる四季折々の行事や風習は、外国の人々にとってはユニークで興味深いものがたくさん。
でも日本ならではのことを英語で伝えるのって難しいですよね。

The meaning of hanami is flower viewing. However, it’s actually about having a picnic while seeing cherry trees in bloom.
「花見」の意味は「花の鑑賞」ですが、実際は咲いた桜の木を見ながら戸外で飲食することです。

Many people enjoy hanami with their family, friends, and colleagues during the cherry blossom season.
桜の季節には多くの人が、家族や友人、同僚と花見を楽しみます。

Some companies hold hanami as a big welcome party for their new employees, which often includes bringing a karaoke machine and a lot of alcohol.
カラオケ機材とたくさんのお酒を持ち込んで、新入社員を歓迎する盛大な宴会として花見をする会社もあります。

It’s also popular to do hanami at night.

History：歴史

The custom of hanami came from China in ancient times.
花見は古代に中国から伝わった習慣です。

The nobles enjoyed hanami, mostly for plum blossoms, while drinking and composing poems.
高貴な人々が、お酒を飲んだり詩を作ったりしながら、主に梅の花見を楽しみました。

From the Heian era, hanami’s main target became cherry blossoms. It’s a tradition lasting more than 1,000 years.
平安時代から、花見の主な対象は桜になりました。それは1,000年以上続く伝統です。

Since the Edo era, hanami has been popular among ordinary citizens, too.
江戸時代以降、花見は庶民の間でもずっと人気を保っています。

Cherry blossoms were loved as a symbol of the samurai’s ideal and the truth of Buddhism.
桜は武士の理想や仏教の真理を表す花として愛されました。

Cherry blossom：桜

The cherry blossom is one of the national flowers of Japan. The other is the chrysanthemum.
桜は、日本の国花の一つです。もう一つの国花は菊です。

Somei-yoshino is the most popular kind among the variety of cherry blossoms.
桜の品種の中で、いちばん人気なのはソメイヨシノです。

Somei-yoshino was born through breeding in the Edo era.
ソメイヨシノは江戸時代に、品種改良によって生まれました。

Generally in Japan, Somei-yoshino gradually comes into bloom from warmer southern areas to colder northern areas every year, from March to April.
日本ではソメイヨシノは一般的に、毎年3月から4月にかけて、南の暖かい地域から北の寒い地域へ順に開花していきます。

It’s worth viewing Somei-yoshino when the numerous petals are falling together.
無数の花びらがいっせいに散っているときのソメイヨシノは見ごたえがありますよ。

When this happens, we call it hana fubuki, or snowstorm of flowers. You can take social-media-worthy pictures.

Change of the fiscal year：年度替わり

Japan’s fiscal year ends in March and starts in April. So, cherry trees are in bloom at the change of the year.
日本では、年度は3月に終わり、4月にスタートします。ですから桜は年度替わりのころ咲きます。

Many events take place during the cherry blossom season, for example, graduation and entrance ceremonies, joining and leaving a company, moving, and so on.

Do you know sakura-mochi? It’s a kind of Japanese sweet. Sakura means cherry blossom, and mochi means rice cake.
