英語で伝える「日本の行事」　5月 こどもの日

日本人が慣れ親しんでいる四季折々の行事や風習は、外国の人々にとってはユニークで興味深いものがたくさん。
でも日本ならではのことを英語で伝えるのって難しいですよね。
この「英語で伝える「日本の行事」」シリーズでは、毎月の行事や風習、文化を英語で説明するフレーズや覚えておくと便利なボキャブラリーをご紹介します。
5月はこどもの日にまつわるフレーズやボキャブラリーを学んでいきましょう。

まえがき

5月の澄みわたる青空に、元気にはためく鯉のぼり。 見るだけでスーッと清々しい気持ちになりますよね。
こどもの日は世界中にありますが、日本の慣習はとってもユニーク！
それだけに、初めて見る人にとっては What the heck??（なんじゃこりゃ？？）なんてことも。
鯉のぼりのほか、兜（かぶと）や菖蒲湯、柏餅やちまきについても、英語で説明してみましょう。

Children’s Day: こどもの日

Children’s Day is annually celebrated on May 5th.
こどもの日は、毎年5月5日にお祝いします。

This national holiday used to be known as Boys’ Day.
この祝日は、以前は男の子の節句として知られていました。

In 1948, the Japanese government changed the official name and made it for all children.
1948年に、日本政府が公式名称を変えて、こどもたちみんなの日にしたんだよ。

Since Girl’s Day on March 3rd is not a public holiday.
3月3日のひな祭りは、祝日じゃないからね。

Therefore, most of Children’s Day customs remain traces of Boy’s Day traditions.
だからこどもの日の風習のほとんどは、端午の節句の習わしのままなんだ。

Carp Streamer: 鯉のぼり

Families with boys hoist colorful carp-shaped streamers outside the house.
男の子のいる家庭は、カラフルな鯉の形の長い旗を家の外に掲げます。

The carp is a symbol of strength and success.
鯉は、強さと成功の象徴。

These days, mini carp streamers are available.
最近は、ミニサイズの鯉のぼりも手に入ります。

You can get one at the supermarket if you like.
欲しかったら、スーパーマーケットで買えるよ。

Samurai Armor and Helmet: 鎧と兜

Miniature Samurai armor and helmet are also popular items.
ミニ鎧兜も、人気のアイテム。

These decorations are believed to counteract the bad luck.
これらの飾りは、悪運を取り払うと信じられています。

How about folding a big Origami Helmet with newspaper?
新聞紙で大きな折り紙兜を作ってみたら？

Lots of instructions are on the Internet.
インターネットに折り方がたくさん載ってる。

I bet it will look great on you!
きっと、君にすっごく似合う！

Sweet Flag Bath: 菖蒲湯

Sweet flag bath, thought to have medicinal properties, is also a part of the celebration.
薬効成分があると考えられている菖蒲湯も、お祝いの一環。

The leaves of sweet flag look very similar to the iris’ but they quite different things.
菖蒲の葉っぱは花菖蒲のモノと似てるけど、2つは全く別物。

Grab a bunch of sweet flags and throw them into the bath.
菖蒲を買ってきて、お風呂にポイっと入れて。

The aroma is so relaxing and it might ward off evil spirits.
香りですごくリラックスできるし、邪気も追い払ってくれるかも。

Kashiwa Mochi and Chimaki: 柏餅とちまき

The signature sweets for Children’s Day are Kashiwa Mochi and Chimaki.
こどもの日の定番スイーツは、柏餅とちまき。

Kashiwa Mochi is a rice cake filled with sweet bean paste wrapped in an oak leaf.
柏餅は、柏の葉につつまれた、甘いあんが詰まったお米スイーツ。

Chimaki is a steamed glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves.
ちまきは、笹に巻いて蒸した餅米スイーツです。

Make sure not to eat those oak and bamboo leaves!
柏と笹の葉っぱは、絶対食べないでね！
