日本人が慣れ親しんでいる四季折々の行事や風習は、外国の人々にとってはユニークで興味深いものがたくさん。
でも日本ならではのことを英語で伝えるのって難しいですよね。
この「英語で伝える「日本の行事」」シリーズでは、毎月の行事や風習、文化を英語で説明するフレーズや覚えておくと便利なボキャブラリーをご紹介します。
7月は七夕にまつわるフレーズやボキャブラリーを学んでいきましょう。

7月になると、カラフルで綺麗な笹の葉飾りがあちこちで揺らめきます。
爽やかな夏のクリスマスツリーのようにも見えますよね！
星祭りにお願いごとを書いて、笹に吊るすのは、日本だけの慣わし。
短冊を笹の枝に結んだら、織姫と彦星の甘くてせつない衝撃のロマンスについても教えてあげましょう。

Star Festival : 七夕（星祭り）

七夕（星祭り)

Tanabata, also referred to as the Star Festival, is a romantic celebration in Japan originated from an ancient Chinese tale.
星祭りとも呼ばれる七夕は、古代中国の物語に由来する日本のロマンティックな行事です。

It takes place on July 7th every year.
毎年7月7日に行われるよ。

Looking up at the starry sky, we think of “star-crossed lovers”: Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Al-tair).
星空を見上げながら、「悲運の恋人たち」の織姫（ベガ）と彦星（アルタイル）に想いを馳せるんだ。

As the date approaches, you are sure to find beautifully decorated bamboo trees at malls and public places.
七夕が近づくにつれて、綺麗に飾られた笹をショッピングモールや公共の場所で見かけるようになるよ。

The thin, long rectangular strips of multicolored paper is called Tanzaku.
細くて長い、長方形のカラフルな紙切れは、短冊といいます。

Origami paper crafts enrich the display.
折り紙も飾りを華やかにしてくれる。

Make your wish : 願いごとをする

願い事をする

Write down your hopes and dreams on the strips and tie them up to bamboo branches.
短冊に希望や夢を書いて、笹の枝にくくり付けよう。

Usually people write their wishes vertically, but you can turn the paper sideways if it’s in English.
普通はお願いごとを縦に書くけど、英語では紙を横にしてもオッケー。

Keep in mind signing your name in the bottom.
下のスペースに名前を書くことを忘れないでね。

Tanabata legend : 七夕伝説

七夕伝説

Orihime was a beautiful talented weaver, and Hikoboshi was a young diligent cow herder.
織姫は美しい才能のある織り手で、彦星は若い働き者の牛飼いでした。

Heaven Emperor arranged a marriage meeting for them, and they really fell hard for each other right away.
天帝は彼らのためにお見合いをセッティング。彼らはすぐにお互いに夢中になりました。

And then, they forgot all of their own duties.
そして、自分たちの仕事を全て忘れてしまいました。

The cows became skinny and Gods’ clothes got worn out.
牛は痩せ細って、神々の着物は擦り切れてしまいました。

Furious, Heaven Emperor separated the two to opposite sides of the Milky Way.
天帝は激怒して、二人を天の川の両岸に引き離しました。

Heartbroken Orihime cried out day and night.
傷心の織姫は、四六時中泣き暮らしました。

Touched by her tears, the Heaven Emperor allowed the couple to meet once a year, on July 7th. Whew!
彼女の涙に心を動かされて、天帝は二人が一年に一度、7月7日に会うことを許しました。ほっ！

Just visit your local department stores, and check out their food section in the basement.

You can find dreamy looking jelly and jellied bean paste dessert that soothe you during the summer heat.
夏の暑さを癒してくれる、幻想的な雰囲気のゼリーや羊羹が見つかるよ。
