英語で伝える「日本の行事」　8月 夏祭り・花火大会

日本人が慣れ親しんでいる四季折々の行事や風習は、外国の人々にとってはユニークで興味深いものがたくさん。
でも日本ならではのことを英語で伝えるのって難しいですよね。
この「英語で伝える「日本の行事」」シリーズでは、毎月の行事や風習、文化を英語で説明するフレーズや覚えておくと便利なボキャブラリーをご紹介します。
8月は夏祭り・花火大会にまつわるフレーズやボキャブラリーを学んでいきましょう。

まえがき

夏といえば、お祭りの季節！
日本では一年を通してさまざまなお祭りが催されますが、夏祭りはちょっと特別です。
花火に盆踊り、浴衣、かき氷と、季節の風物詩が目白押し。
日本の花火大会はユニークな花火が多くて豪華なことでも有名です。
海外の方とも一緒に、お祭りや花火大会で楽しいひとときが過ごせますように。

Summer festival : 夏祭り

There are countless summer festivals in Japan from July to August.
7月から8月にかけて、日本では無数の夏祭りが催されるよ。

Festival stalls lined up along the streets, and you can enjoy typical B gourmet food and traditional games like water balloon fishing or a shooting gallery.
お祭りの屋台が通りに並んでいて、典型的なB級グルメや、ヨーヨー釣りや射的などのゲームが楽しめるんだ。

They are all unique and fun.
すごく独創的で楽しいよ。

It’s a great opportunity to gather with friends and family.
家族や友達と集まるいいチャンス。

お祭りを見つけたら、歩き回ってしっかり観察してみて！

Fireworks show : 花火大会

Most of fireworks shows are held in the summer too.
ほとんどの花火大会も、夏におこなわれるよ。

In Japan, fireworks are a huge deal.
日本で花火はとっても重要。

You can see the most spectacular and also unique ones like heart shapes, smiley faces and Hello Kitty. It’s truly overwhelming.
最高に見事で、しかもハートやニコニコマーク、ハローキティみたいにユニークなモノも見れるよ。ホントに圧倒される。

Major fireworks displays last one or two hours.
大きな花火大会は、1時間から2時間続く。

Enjoy the breathtaking moment with your favorite beverage.
お気に入りのドリンクを持って、息を呑むほど素晴らしいひとときを楽しもう。

Bon Odori : 盆踊り

At some festivals, you might find a bunch of people dancing in a circle around the stage.
お祭りによっては、ステージの周りで円を描いて踊っている群衆が見つかるかも。

The dance is called ‘Bon Odori’ in Japanese.
ダンスは日本語で「盆踊り」って呼ばれている。

Bon is an annual Buddhist event to honor ancestors.
お盆は、先祖を尊ぶ仏教行事だよ。

They are following the same dance sequence with Bon Odori songs and Taiko drums.
盆踊りの歌と太鼓に合わせて、みんな一緒に同じ動きをしてるんだ。

If you are brave enough, you should definitely take part in.
勇気があれば、絶対参加するべき。

It’s more fun if you dance with the crowd.
大勢と一緒に踊るともっと楽しいよ。

Movements are quite simple, you can just copy what the other people do.
踊りはかなりシンプルだから、他の人の真似をするだけで大丈夫。

Yukata and Jimbei : 浴衣と甚平

Yukata and Jinbei are Japanese traditional clothing.
浴衣と甚平は、日本の伝統的な衣服なんだ。

There is no dress code though, it’s just so cool to wear Yukata at the festival.
ドレスコードはないけど、お祭りで浴衣を着るのはすごく素敵なこと。

Yukata sets which include a sash and a pair of wooden clogs might be convenient for girls.
女の子たちには、帯と下駄が入った浴衣セットが便利。

You can get a Japanese hair accessory for your up hair, too.
アップにした髪に、和風のヘアアクセサリーをつけてもいいよね。

For guys, jinbei would be a good choice too.
男の子たちには甚平もいいよ。

It is much more comfortable than Yukata, and easy to put on.
浴衣よりずっと着心地がいいし、着るのもラク。

Snow cone : かき氷

If you want to quench your thirst with something different, snow cone would be your choice.
もし、ちょっと変わったもので喉の渇きを癒したかったら、かき氷がおすすめ。

It’s a great way to cool down.
クールダウンするのに最適なんだ。

Typical flavors are strawberry, melon, and Blue Hawaii.
よくあるフレーバーは、ストロベリーやメロンやブルーハワイ。

You can get your tongue colored after having them. Ewwww!
食べた後に舌に色がつくよ。ひゃあ！

Chilled pineapples, Chocolate covered bananas and candy apples are also other popular sweets.
冷やしパインやチョコがけバナナ、リンゴ飴も人気のスイーツです。
