英語で伝える「日本の行事」　10月 運動会

日本人が慣れ親しんでいる四季折々の行事や風習は、外国の人々にとってはユニークで興味深いものがたくさん。
でも日本ならではのことを英語で伝えるのって難しいですよね。
この「英語で伝える「日本の行事」」シリーズでは、毎月の行事や風習、文化を英語で説明するフレーズや覚えておくと便利なボキャブラリーをご紹介します。
10月は運動会にまつわるフレーズやボキャブラリーを学んでいきましょう。

まえがき

日本の運動会は世界でも稀に見るユニークさ。
ダンスに騎馬戦、組体操など、ショーの要素が満載です。
海外の運動会はたいてい陸上競技のみ。父兄の参観もありません。
だから、海外の方にとって日本の運動会は驚きの連続。
玉入れや大玉転がしなどのルールを英語で説明すると、とても喜んでもらえます。
楽しい一日になりますように。

Sports festival : 運動会

Japanese elementary school host an annual sports day.
日本の小学校は年に一度、運動会を開催するんだ。

It’s an all-day event.
一日がかりのイベント。

Family members and local residents are invited.
家族や地元の人たちが招待されるよ。

You should bring a lunch box, a camera, sunscreen, and a plastic sheet.
お弁当とカメラ、日焼け止めとレジャーシートは持ってくるべき。

Show up early and secure a comfortable spot in the shade. Folding chairs are handy too.
早く行って木陰の心地よい場所を確保しよう。折り畳み式の椅子も便利。

Events are listed on the program. Go through that beforehand.
種目はプログラムに書いてある。前もってチェックしておいて。

Opening ceremony : 開会式

In an opening ceremony, the school principal and PTA chairperson give a long speech.
開会式では、校長とPTA会長の長いスピーチがある。

After that, students spread out and do radio exercises.
その後、生徒は広がってラジオ体操をする。

Then students are divided into teams to compete the points.
それから生徒はチームに分かれてポイントを競うよ。

Events : 競技

Bean bag toss is the game younger students toss the small bean bags into an overhead basket. This is just so adorable.
玉入れは低学年の生徒が頭上のバスケットにお手玉を投げ入れるゲーム。これはとっても可愛らしい。

Tug-of-war and obstacle course tend to be the PTA events that guests can join. If you’d like to participate, don’t miss it.
綱引きと障害物競争はゲストが参加できるPTAの種目のことも多いよ。参加したかったら、チャンスを逃さないでね。

Mock cavalry battle is the game a student rides piggyback on the other three kids and fights to grab their opponent’s headband. The players at the bottom move around and support the top one.
騎馬戦は他の3人の子供に乗った生徒が敵のはちまきを取るために戦うゲーム。下の子供たちは動き回って上の子をサポートする。

Also, students perform dances with Japanese traditional music or recent J-pops.
生徒たちは日本の伝統的な音楽や最近のJ-popに合わせてダンスを披露したりもする。

And then, older students perform group gymnastic formation. Human pyramids and human towers are included in this program. They are pretty spectacular!
それから高学年は組体操をする。人間ピラミッドや人間タワーはこのプログラムに組み込まれているんだ。かなり壮観！

There are some more events like sprint or three-legged race though, relay is the highlight of the festival. This is the most exciting moment of the day.
短距離走や二人三脚もあるけど、リレーは運動会のハイライト。一日で一番エキサイティングな瞬間。

Closing ceremony : 閉会式

In a closing ceremony, there are several speeches, again!
閉会式でもスピーチがいくつかある。また！

Staff count the points and announce the winner.
運営がポイントを数えて勝者を発表する。

But win or lose doesn’t matter. Everyone celebrates their deeper bonds and hard work, and heads home with happy feelings.
でも勝敗は関係ない。みんな深くなった絆と努力を祝って、幸せな気持ちで家に向かうんだ。
